I used to RP quite a bit (before I joined the Navy) and am still in touch with the guys that I RPed with (all of whom were buddies from HS - shit, one of them
I have known since first grade...).
I started with
TMNT then onto
AD&D 2E and then to
Rifts - and then to
D&D 3.X,
which I have been enjoying quite a bit. I'd really like to run a couple of campaigns that don't use any sort of D&D rules, but as the ideas behind
them seem to appeal to only me, it is likely to never get off the ground.
Last year I joined a group (the
Iron Gamers Guild in the Capital-region of NY) and am playing
D&D once a week - see the AP thread for campaign specifics.
I read a lot - my tastes run the gamut from the comics of
Mutts,
Sherman's Lagoon,
Bloom County,
Calvin and Hobbes (not that
C&H should count because I can't think of anyone who DOESN'T like that) to the more
noirish works of Andrew Vachss and Joe R. Lansdale to the horror stylings of Dean R. Koontz, Stephen King (his short stories moreso than his novels - he tends
to be a wordy fuck) and Richard Matheson to the sci-fi goodness of Issac Asimov ("The Ugly Little Boy" made me cry it was so beautiful) to the
oldie-but-goodie
All Creatures Great and Small works by James Herriot to the seriously pissing-me-off works of Robert Jordan (that
Wheel of
Time shit needs to end up quick) and quite whimsical
Harry Potter books (if you haven't read, you need to give them a shot - good
stuff). Within the last year I also discovered the
Watch series by Sergei Lukyanenko. I am currently enamored of the works of Harlan Ellison
and the "Gray Mouser and Fafhrd" stories by Fritz Leiber.
I like good horror (
In the Mouth of Madness,
The Thing (1982),
The Ring) and bad horror (which tends to veer into really shitty
comedy - think the
Jack Frost that doesn't star Michael Keaton).
I like good comedy (think
As Good As It Gets) and bad (like
Shakes the Clown - comedy gold).
I enjoy a good drama (
Dangerous Liasons) and action flicks that don't suck balls (
Matrix? Good.
Matrix Revolutions? Sucks.).
My musical tastes run from the punk compilations to Barry Manilow to Abba to Megadeth to Eminem to Pat Benetar to Avenged Sevenfold.
80's music holds a special place in my heart because most of it is so damned irritating.
I like
The Simpsons and was pissed as hell that they took
Arrested Development (which I am going on record here saying that
it was "Best TV show EVER") off the air. I am recently enamored with
30 Rock, which is an adequate replacement that was the insanity
of
AD.
I don't watch much TV anymore because the childrens don't allow for it so much.
